Humane Society Fundraiser
by Jessica (mikalero)
at January 30th, 2010 (11:52 am)

Hey all. I am posting to raise awareness about a Humane Society in great need. On January 13th, the Ritchie County Humane Society in West Virginia had a massive fire that burned down their cattery/supply building. 50 cats and 13 dogs were lost, and 99% of their supplies were burned up. Food, medicines, blankets, everything went up in smoke. The county and state government is contributing what they can, but it's a very rural county in a not so well off state.

The following buttons are links to a paypal-like donation system. They have a couple sponsors who are willing to match certain raised funds, as well as a rebuilding fund. If you'd like to see a list of specific things the shelter still needs, you can find it at their petfinder website at http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/WV22.html

They still have alot of cats and dogs in foster care, the new kennel which did not burn down, as well as the animals who are still being dropped off every day, so if you have the ability and willingness to spare anything to help, it'd be very much appreciated.

This video promotes animal abuse!

Please spread the word. Don't remain a passive witness. Go to this YouTube video and flag it as animal abuse. Please do something.

The owner of this hamster intentially placed the hamster in a situation, where he/she made the hamster tip backwards and hamster's paws got stuck between the piano's keys for at couple of moments. This is NOT a natural position or environment for a hamster.

The most shocking part is that this video received 50,000+ views and a lot of POSITIVE comments. People write that this video is "sweet" and "cute" and completely oversee the fact that hamster's paws got stuck between the piano's keys.

This video also inspires a lot of people to do similar experiments to their hamsters. It's a mild form for animal abuse, yet it's still animal abuse.

Here is the video:

My cat has been ripping her hair out excessively over the past two months. She doesn't have flease or ticks. This started when we moved... Could it be stress related or could it be an allergy to something in this new house?

I'll delete this if it is, but...

Does anyone wanna work the NIN concert with my friend Rachelle this Sunday @ DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI? She really wants a vegetarian/someone interested in animal rights to work with her (for PETA2) but she doesn't have a car to get her there. Thanks in advance!

Her myspace can be found here and her AIM screenname is hannahdead.

Hi. I have no idea whether last Easter's "Make Mine Chocolate" campaign was successful or not, but I hope it was. I regret to inform everyone that certain establishments in Manila had given out live bunnies for the occasion.Collapse )

"Crow poisoning program going well, officials say"

LANCASTER, Pa. -- A poisoning program to reduce the crow population in Lancaster County is scheduled to end next week, and so far it looks as if the program has worked well, according to officials.

"It'll be an ongoing program next year and the years after to educate the birds when they come to this area, to the county primarily, not to stop in this spot. Go to the other areas -- the other three roosts they are using now if we can get them acclimated to that," said Manheim Township Manager Jim Martin.

The poison being used is DRC-1339. There have been no long term studies done on this poison, and yes it is harmful to humans and domestic animals. The poison is scattered on the ground in pellet form, so yes it is leaching into the water system.

There is a local organization protesting this poisoning, but everyone can help a little. The local news channel is taking a vote for/against the crow poisoning, and the committee is using these statistics to beef up their protest.

I'm sorry this has been late, but we'ere going to postpone releasing the results another week, because both mods are incredibly busy at the moment (our school season has just started).

Due to this business, we have two options:
Temporarily close animalcare for half a month.
Hire two new mods.

If you'd like to be a mod, e-mail tragiclies@hotmail.com

I saw this community in zoologists, but the community(zoologists) won't let me join because when I click "join the community", it says "page not found"... but anyways.

I want to study pre-vet and biology at USC in Aiken. I would study zoology but it doesn't offer it. In grad. school I really want to study wildlife medicine.

I really want to start getting more involved in the animal & wildlife community. Does anyone know some good websites? I'd appreciate it.

This is random, but if anyone knows some good websites on wolf preserves too, that'd be good.
